OT: A little computer help, Please (Virus related!)

Somehow, I ended up getting an "exploit-byte verify" virus on my pc. I checked it out and although it doesn't seem serious, I want to make sure that my virus sofware has totally wiped it out.
One of the things it does is change your home page on Explorer to nothing or a c:\\ address, and doesn't let you change it back. (It darkens the options in the home page section so you are unable to click on them.) The reason I'm not sure that it's gone is that I still can't change my homepage back.

What do I need to do so the options in homepage section in Internet Properties are highlighted again?

Disable System Restore, run the AV Clean again, and then re enable System Restore.

Also check your favorites in IE as there may have been some porno links added.

Now it lets me change my homepage, but when I start explorer again, it's back the way it was before! What the hell is going on?

I would consider finding your initial install CD and work to do a repair installation.

that covers some of them... and you can get to the rest of them fairly easily.

you're basically going to have to follow those steps... update virus definitions, disable system restore, restart in safe mode, full scan, delete anything that is infected, check the registry for straglers, reset ur web settings

and once all that is done disengage safe mode, see if it worked and if it did renable system restore.

I've done about six repair jobs in the last two weeks involving Spyware that takes over the DNS. Basically, if you remove the spyware, you disable Internet Explorer sicne it no longer can look up sites by name. And you can't just re-install IE (or even Netscape) to fix it back. EVERY time, I've had to reinstall Windows. So back up all your data, and start re-installing (not a bad thing to do on a regular basis anyway).

You CAN rename the Windows folder using an emergency disk, then install Windows back in the default folder, but back up all your documents, outlook files, etc. since they may be overwritten. And good luck. I've had lots of problems with this type of spyware. OTOH, I've gotten lots of jobs from it too!

...and if I back up whatever files, won't I just be transfering the goddamn virus back when I copy the files to the hard drive again?
